Taking a walk may sound simple, but it can have profound effects on your mind, body, and spirit. Physical stimulation from the repetitive movement has many benefits including managing or preventing heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure. Walking can improve sleep, help develop balance and coordination, strengthen muscles and bones, improve breathing, and slow mental decline. In addition, the physical action of walking can help one to maintain a healthy weight, build endurance, and enrich overall mood. There are plenty of options for taking a walk. For example, if you cannot get outside because of your allergies then hop onto a treadmill or take a stroll in the local mall or grocery store.

Even if it means using a stroller or a wheelchair and the help of another person, one can take a walk. Besides the obvious physical benefits, there are mental benefits that come from the time you spend moving through space. By moving around even just a little bit, one can benefit from visual, auditory, and other sensory sensations that rouse the mind and the spirit. If you are outdoors, you can benefit from vitamin D by spending time in the sunshine. A huge step above watching television, the stimulation of seeing new and unpredictable events in real life can boost your creativity and enhance your mood. If you have the pleasure of taking a walk with another person, talking while walking can also boost brain activity and lead to enhanced cognitive function.

Being mindful in your movement is a significant element to walking that can truly change your life. Instead of aimlessly moving, focus on the quality of your breath, engage your pelvic floor muscles, observe your steps, notice the oscillation of your hips, sense the swing of your shoulders, and be aware of all of your senses. What does the air smell like? What do you see around you? What sounds do you hear? What do feel in your body as well as outside your body? Taking the time to notice these small details can completely change your walk and your life. Now, go take a walk.
