When it comes to a healthy lifestyle the most effective approach is to clean up your food intake. What does "clean up" really mean? There can be varying degrees of cleaning up your nutrition. For some that may mean reducing your frequency of eating fast food to once a day and for others it may mean completely eliminating fast food all together. You are in charge of how extreme these changes are to your nutritional habits.

I lean toward actually cleaning out my pantry and cold food items first and foremost. If I see unhealthy food at the grocery store or in a restaurant, I can avoid it more easily than if it is in my house. It is cathartic and truly productive to go through what is already there before buying new food. It is an opportunity to toss items that may be expired and you get to truly think about what you want to eliminate from your daily meals.

To some, this might look rather organized and rather healthy. For others, this may look like chaos and chocked full of unhealthy foods. Either way, I made myself a goal of cleaning out old foods, eliminating foods that no longer serve my body in a healthy manner, and to reorganize the space. Having a game plan before you begin will help you to stay on track.

So I started from scratch and removed all the food so that I could actually clean the pantry shelves. At the local organizational store, I picked up a few chalk stickers, a chalk pen, and some glass containers. By using the glass containers with the chalk labels, I eliminated a ton of clutter out of the pantry. The glass containers cost more at first but in the long run they preserve the food products longer than plastic bags.

Once the job is complete, you can bask in the glory of your hard work. Did you get rid of old food? Did you clean up your food space? Did you toss old items that are not in your current best interest? Take a moment to thank yourself for taking that time to clean it up. Meal preparation should be a bit easier with your food stores more organized and containing items that you truly care to keep in the mix. Now it is time to cook!
